Checking Out is a short film about a queer date gone mentally ill, where no one is crazy and humor and hope prevail.
written by Ames Miyako and directed by Ariel Zucker
When a really good date brings up a past trauma, Alex (played by Ames Miyako) has a dissociative episode at the worst possible moment: a first kiss with their really cute date Jess. Trapped inside the literal walls of their own psyche, Alex is challenged by “Cool Alex”, a past version of themselves, to crack the psychological code needed to get back into their body.

What parts of our ancestors’ stories do we rely on to define ourselves? Can comedy make pain funny, or is it just painful to watch? And does Ames REALLY laugh like Seth Rogan? Grandpa Comedy Show is a Japanese-American stand-up, sit-down, story time about intergenerational joy despite intergenerational trauma, and how we tend the gardens that came before us.
Grandpa Comedy Show has been performed for multiple sold-out audiences in Los Angeles.
